Candidates are required to publish at least two articles in ISI-indexed journals. Research activities often involve multidisciplinary approaches and collaborations with industry and research institutions.

Students are encouraged to participate in research networks, mobility programmes, and international conferences, with possible financial support through university grants or supervisor research funds.

Academic Qualifications

Applicants seeking admission into the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme in Material Science and Engineering must meet one of the following criteria:

1. Master’s Degree
   A Master’s degree from a university or higher education institution recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), or accredited by a recognized foreign accreditation body.
2. Equivalent Qualification
   Other qualifications deemed equivalent to a Master’s degree, or qualifications supported by relevant professional experience, subject to approval by the University Senate.
3. Master’s to PhD Conversion
   A candidate currently enrolled in a full-time Master’s programme at the University (under Sub-regulation 6(a)) may be considered for conversion to the doctoral programme, upon recommendation by the Faculty/Institute’s Graduate Studies Committee and approval by the Dean/Director.
4. Bachelor’s Degree with Distinction
   A Bachelor’s degree with distinction from a recognized university or higher learning institution, subject to Faculty/Institute requirements and approval by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/or a recognized foreign accreditation board.
5. Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)
   Any other qualification recognized by the Senate through APEL assessment.
6. Programme-Specific Requirements
   Fulfilment of any additional requirements stipulated by the specific programme (where applicable).
7. Compliance with MQA Standards
   All candidates must satisfy the regulations and standards set by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

English Language Proficiency Requirements

1. International Applicants
   International candidates must demonstrate English language proficiency through one of the following:
   Achieving the minimum required scores in one of the following examinations (as prescribed by the programme):

   • TOEFL: Minimum score of 550

   • IELTS: Minimum band score of 6.0

   • MUET: Minimum Band 4

2. Exemption from English Language Requirement
   The Faculty/Institute may grant exemption from the above English proficiency requirements to international applicants who:

   • Intend to write their thesis/dissertation in Malay or Arabic;

   • Hold academic qualifications from local universities recognized by the Senate; or

   • Are citizens of countries where English is the official language, or have completed prior academic studies in institutions where English was the medium of instruction.
